mutiny

begun 16 October 2005

Mutiny is wilful silencing, a refusal to follow official instructions. It mistrusts the spoken and written word. It mistrusts authority over the body, over the ground beneath its feet. Ecofeminism, Deep Ecology. Personal crisis, planetary crisis. Mental illness, mood swings, the irrational, accidental and other-logical. The realisation that the mind is a hormonal swampy stomach craving information and pleasant stories which make the body feel fit for survival. The realisation that I will never understand - that it might make sense, but that making sense is like singing a love song, and hoping you hit the right tune.

So here I am, a grown up boy finding myself concerned with the voice of a little girl. There is a red woman and a green man. There are ships, plants and water. I have no idea where I'm headed, except that the old answers are dead.

this follows the secure project

Video installations, photographs, graphics and poetry take the current global issues of (in)security into the heart of white suburban culture in South Africa. An early version of 'secure' showed at the UNISA Oak Square Gallery in January 2004. Later that year the DVD was briefly shown at the Whitechapel Gallery, London. Armed and ready was selected for the Brett Kebble Art Award Show in 2004. After Purity was last seen at the Ekhuruleni Art Awards 2005. Benchmarks still awaits exhibition.
