Kai Lossgott. 2001.
house.
site-specific performance.
Grey River Valley, Grahamstown, South Africa.

House is about boundaries, separation, membranes, about containing and being contained in the world. It is about feeling watched, about watching oneself, about wanting to be alone, but wanting to be with other people - about wanting to be clean, but wanting to give in to the dirt which overwhelms one.

Water cleanses the body. Fire cleanses the soul, in many sacred traditions. Yet in rehearsal I sometimes felt nothing could cleanse the shit-smeared ruin by at the foot of the mountain where the river ran by. Every day there was more. That I had chosen to colonise the old building with my performance did not stop the local population from using it as a toilet. House adresses basic questions of civilisation and ownership.
