DIGITAL VIDEO TECHNIQUES FOR ARTISTSBe spontaneous, open to new ideas, explore, play and surrender! This is a crash course which will immerse you in synaesthetic experiences, stimulate your perceptual and conceptual abilities and provide you with the technological literacy for further exploration in this field. Although theoretical knowledge forms its backbone, the greater emphasis during the next two weeks is placed on learning by experience.Through group exercises, you will come to understand sound as a primary sensory experience. You will look at sound and image composition, record your own media and edit it on Final Cut Pro 4. Learn to edit by drawing on contrasts and tensions between image and sound, visual rhythms and aural patterns. The emphasis is on group work. You will learn how camera angles and movement are used to create meaning, and how shots are put together to communicate. By the end of this workshop you should understand the principles behind continuity and discontinuity editing and be able to apply them, but be aware of film languages outside the cinematic paradigm. JOURNEYS WITH A CAMERAa digital still photography workshop with video artist Kai Lossgott The revolution is upon us! Digital technology opens up a whole new approach to making pictures. Explore the secrets of image composition and lighting, as you are guided into the conceptual, perceptual and technical process of how photographs 'happen'. You will be challenged to be more inventive and to push beyond your own expectations to reclaim a hidden part of yourself, as you grow more and more certain of skills you never knew you had. Throughout the course, theoretical discussion and technique are backed up by hands-on outdoor shooting assignments. Digital technology makes your work instantly accessible in class on the lecturer's laptop computer, allowing for continuous detailed feedback on your progress. There will also be a brief introduction to the possibilities of digital photo manipulation, for those who wish to persue the digital process further. Please note: basic working knowledge of your camera is required. You must at least know how to point and shoot.
